Zhengguo Canal Tourist Scenic Area
Overview
The Zhengguo Canal, known as one of the three major water conservancy projects of the Qin Empire alongside the Dujiangyan in Sichuan and the Lingqu Canal in Guangxi, is celebrated as a marvel of ancient Chinese engineering. Often called the "First Canal under Heaven," it is also recognized as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure. The canal reflects the evolution of water diversion, storage, and irrigation technologies across different historical periods and carries rich cultural significance. It is sometimes called China’s "Natural Museum."
History
Construction of the Zhengguo Canal began in the first year of King Ying Zheng’s reign (246 BCE) and was completed over a span of more than 10 years. The project, initially part of the strategic plan of the Han State to exhaust the Qin forces, played a crucial role in strengthening Qin's economic power and aiding in the eventual unification of China. The canal has a history of over 2,200 years and remains a critical historical and engineering marvel.
